About

I work as a freelance LAMP developer in the south of England, often using encryption and bespoke JavaScript/AJAX in projects. Recent projects include cloud server security hardening, a corporate evaluation system, and the Florist Exchange website, database, and CMS.

A decade ago, I worked as a copywriter (hence this domain name). In 2000, I learnt to code simple websites as part of writing assignments, and eventually tiring of business writing, moved to web development. I'm pleased I did — it opened up many new challenges and interests. While much of web development can be fun and immersive, I'm more visual than mathematical — usually preferring pixels to data strings. In the last four years I've pursued more programming, and this combined with my visual slant, has led to experiments with 'generative art'.

My favourite generative tools are Processing and FreeBASIC. Both of these open source languages are superb for quickly developing ideas into working programs. Processing is fast, with nice OOP and image export, built-in 3D Perlin noise and anti-aliasing, and is almost limitless in its capabilities through library extensions. FreeBASIC is faster still and lower level, more like C. I occasionally use Flex/AS3 for its particular strengths, dabble with applications such as Context Free, and use a combination of scripting and other applications to exploit the 3D ruleset power of Structure Synth.
